Immersive Live Concerts
Capture A Complete Concert - But Do It Solo
Google and Grammy winning artist ZEDD were collaborating to create immersive content for YouTube. Google had sent a VR camera, and I was asked to come and help film a recap of Zedd's first headlining show at Red Rocks Amphitheater.
I had been directing concert content for several years and knew that to capture a immersive concert really required the use of several cameras. Each point in time is unique and I wanted to transport the audience to the venue so they would feel truly present in that moment.
With no additional budget to bring on any extra crew members, I would have to run the entire production solo. So I gathered 3x 180VR cameras and 1x 3D360 camera with my spatial audio mics and headed out to Colorado.
I had shot dozens of concerts at Red Rocks and was able to scout and place each camera at precise locations in the venue to capture the most spectacular views. We were able to setup and test the night before, working with Zedd's lighting team I had them run through all of the large and brightest lighting setups and dialed in the exposure for each location, as I wouldn't be able to monitor the live feed of each camera the whole time.
Putting one of the VR180 cameras on a gimbal also provided me with flexibility so I could move around the space and capture additional angles for key moments of the show.
After it was over we had the full show captured from multiple angles and we edited together a highlight to promote and help sell out the rest of the Orbit Tour.
